I friend of mine, whom I respect his opinion on tone works at a local music store. He told my that he was going to be selling a few guitars for a friend of his, and they were both equipped with Zhang pickups, and that they awesome pickups. The bridge is a Brownbucker Alnico 5 and measures in at 9.2k. The neck is a Pagey 2 and measures in at 7.5k. Both of these pickups are Zhangbuckers Pure Hand Wound option with the splat mod, which allows for a stronger single coil sound when split. David's pickups are very popular and the wait time for a set of these is at least 3 months.BRIDGE: Plenty of early-Zep grunt and honk without losing the vintage hollowness and double-tones.This and the Brownbucker are my most popular bridge winds. NECK: Plenty of flute and bell, fat when you want it to be, shimmer and snap at your command.It’s all in your touch. The middle position was glassy and plucky sounding - kind of like the middle position on a guitar with two P90s, but not as glassy and sparkly as a normal Tele. The Polymaths are unique in the range due to the magnet. In fact I don't know of any pickup manufacturer apart from Throbak and Zhangbucker that uses isotropic Alnico V.The Zhangbucker bridge rough cast A2 is an amazing pickup. I know David Plummer has the magic as well so I am sure it is more than a magnet but his pure hand wound pickups Duane bucker and Brown bucker (bridge pickup) with rough cast A2's have taken over at my shop.BTW Zhangbucker offers some neck humbucker voiced for tele neck. The set that came out sounded muddy in comparison, even though the outputs are similar, the stock pickups are between 8-9K, with A5 magnets.

I had them specifically crafted with a few of my own specifications, but am not going to share the ingredients of my unique sound. Let's just say that what turned out is really, really good. On both guitars I have a hard time playing any pickup other than the Zhangbucker Firebird pickup. I mention this because this Epiphone Bonamassa pickup rivals David's pickups. Since then I found out about using a pair of stacked 250k/500k pots, and also that Zhangbucker makes a few versions of "Telebucker" pickups which are very low wind (like, 6.5k and lower) and intended to be used in the neck ...These Zhangbucker 90-Buckers are incredible. Among the best I've played or heard, but since this guitar is routed for humbuckers, it makes the most sense to swap the pickups in this guitar rather than the guitars routed for P90's. Zhangbucker - you can get a true handwound pickup if you want. Despite the name it's a guy in California winding them. Sunset pickups on Reverb is another California guy, not sure how active he is lately. I have pickups from both and both are excellent. The set that came out sounded muddy in comparison, even though the outputs are similar, the stock pickups are between 8-9K, with A5 magnets. I definitely wouldn't draw that comparison myself, the sound and feel you get from the blade pickups is very different to a traditional humbucker design. The Polymaths are unique in the range due to the magnet. In fact I don't know of any pickup manufacturer apart from Throbak and Zhangbucker that uses isotropic Alnico V.I have been very, very seriously contemplating getting a set of Zhangbucker pickups (one of these many boutique winders) for my 2016 Trad. Among the best I've played or heard, but since this guitar is routed for humbuckers, it makes the most sense to swap the pickups in this guitar rather than the guitars routed for P90's.
